Robben Island
The infamous
Robben Island - a jail for political prisoners - is where Nelson Mandela
amongst many others was held during the apartheid years.
The guides
who now work there are all former inmates and their harrowing accounts of
life make the visit unforgettable.

The quarry where Nelson Mandela broke rocks for many years. The harsh
reflective rock left many prisoners with damaged eyesight. |
On their return to Robben Island, Mandela, then President, and other
prisoners made this cairn as a memorial. The different colours, shapes
and sizes reflect the multicultural nature of South Africa. |
