French, German & Spanish GCSE

Each of the three languages follow a broadly similar curriculum based on four modules followed by an Examination at the end of Year 11. Currently the AQA syllabus is followed.

Exam components

Each of the four exam components can be taken at Foundation ( F) or Higher (H) Level - this is usually decided towards December in Year 11.
The four components are:

• Listening - a 30-minute ( F) or 50-minute (H) exam with candidates answering a variety of styles from shorter multiple choice or true or false questions, to longer gap-filling style questions.
  
• Reading - similar to the listening exam but based on the written word!
  
• Writing - a writing exam is available at both Levels but we currently favour Course Work. Candidates produce a minimum of three pieces based on topics studied in the different Modules. Each piece should be approximately 120-140 words (F) or 150-200 words (H).
  
• Speaking - this has three distinct elements:
  1 - a role play based on a typical holiday/tourist situation - candidates have 10 (F) or 15 (H) minutes to prepare - no dictionaries allowed!
  2 - a presentation of the candidate's choice - basically a 11/2 minute speech on any topic (usually a memorised course work piece)
  3 - a general conversation of approximately 4 (F) or 6 (H) minutes
